Ibrahim Al-Masri came to Canada from Egypt in 2003. He built a life here: a small halal grocery store in Scarborough, a warm family with three children aged 8 to 16, and a reputation in the community as the person who always helped without being asked.
Three years ago, Ibrahim was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease. His kidneys have been failing steadily. In January, his nephrologist confirmed he is in Stage 5 — end-stage renal failure. He is on dialysis three times a week, four hours each session. It is exhausting. His business has had to close. His wife is working double shifts as a personal support worker to keep the family afloat.
The good news: A living donor — a close family friend who is a match — has agreed to donate a kidney. The surgery is scheduled. The surgeon is ready.
The problem: While the surgery itself is covered by OHIP (Ontario Health Insurance Plan), the following costs are not:
| Cost | Amount |
|---|---|
| Donor's lost income during recovery (6 weeks) | $8,400 |
| Anti-rejection medication (first year) | $11,200 |
| Post-transplant monitoring and clinic visits | $4,800 |
| Home care and physiotherapy | $3,600 |
| Travel costs (donor lives in Vancouver) | $2,000 |
| Total | $30,000 |
Ibrahim's family has exhausted their savings on dialysis-related costs. His community has done what it can. Now we are asking the broader ummah.
"Whoever relieves a Muslim of a hardship, Allah will relieve him of a hardship on the Day of Judgement." (Muslim)
Please give what you can. If we overshoot the target, every extra dollar goes toward Ibrahim's ongoing medication costs. He will need anti-rejection drugs for life.
The surgery is scheduled. Your donation can make it happen.
